Niagara-on-the-Lake Visitor FAQ
Eight questions travellers ask most — about the town, the wine, the theatre and this archive — answered from the site's own records.
What is Niagara-on-the-Net?
Niagara-on-the-Net is the community directory of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario — first published in 1996 as the town's premier online service. It lists restaurants, lodgings, wineries, shops, services and community organizations with addresses and phone numbers, and is preserved today as a static archive of the original site.
Where is Niagara-on-the-Lake located?
Niagara-on-the-Lake sits in Ontario, Canada, at the mouth of the Niagara River where it meets Lake Ontario — about 20 kilometres from the City of Niagara Falls, 30 minutes from Buffalo, and roughly 1.5 hours from Toronto.
How do I get to Niagara-on-the-Lake from Toronto or Buffalo?
From Toronto, take the Q.E.W. and exit at 38b onto Highway 55 toward Virgil. From Buffalo and Niagara Falls, take exit 38 off the Q.E.W. to Highway 55. Both routes are the ones published on the original site's directions pages.
What is Niagara-on-the-Lake best known for?
The world-renowned Shaw Festival, the reconstructed Fort George, award-winning estate wineries and Canadian ice wine, and a preserved Victorian Old Town often called the prettiest town in Canada.
When is the best time of year to visit?
The town is a year-round destination: the Shaw Festival runs through the warm months, the Niagara Grape & Wine Festival arrives each September, and winter brings quiet streets and cozy inn weekends. Summer offers the fullest calendar of events.
Where can I taste Niagara ice wine?
Several estate wineries in and around town produce ice wine — Inniskillin's 1989 Icewine famously won Vinexpo's Grand Prix d'Honneur. Browse the wineries guide and the featured profile of Karl Kaiser of Inniskillin for the full story.
How do I find a specific business or service in town?
Use the A–Z business directory — all 376 archived listings on one searchable page — or browse the activities, dining, lodging, shopping, wineries and services guides.
Are the phone numbers and addresses on this site still current?
The listings are a faithful archive of the original 1996–97 directory; addresses and phones were current when first published. Because businesses change over three decades, treat them as historical data — see the about page for the site's preservation policy.
Still have a question?
